Renting a Car in Mallorca: What to Know

E-IB-Mallorca - Ma-10 - km 34 S

A rental car is useful in Mallorca when your plans include mountain villages, rural accommodation and several coastal areas. It is less useful for days spent entirely in Palma, where parking can become the main task. Decide which days actually need a vehicle before comparing weekly rates.

Choose the car around roads and luggage

A smaller vehicle is often easier to manage on narrow streets and mountain roads, provided it genuinely fits your passengers and bags. Check luggage capacity rather than assuming every car in a category has the same usable boot.

If you need an automatic, child seat or another specific feature, book it explicitly and understand whether it is guaranteed. Check the supplier’s age, licence and additional-driver conditions before paying. An attractive headline price is not useful if someone in your group cannot legally or contractually drive the vehicle.

Read the insurance and deposit terms

Compare the excess, deposit and exclusions as well as the daily rental charge. A separate reimbursement policy can work differently from cover provided at the counter: you may still have to pay the rental company first and claim later.

Check which card is required, whose name must appear on it and whether the available limit covers the deposit. Do this before travelling rather than discovering at collection that a debit card or another person’s credit card is not accepted.

Tyres, glass, keys and roadside assistance can have separate conditions. Read what is included and choose based on the financial exposure you are comfortable accepting, not simply the phrase “full cover”.

Collection and return deserve time

Photograph existing damage, wheels and the fuel level before departure, and make sure disputed marks are recorded. Confirm the fuel policy and the procedure if a warning light or mechanical problem appears.

On return, allow time to refuel, find the correct entrance and complete the inspection. An off-airport office may add a shuttle journey. Check out-of-hours arrangements and keep the return record until the deposit and final charges are resolved.

Parking is part of the accommodation choice

Ask whether parking is allocated, paid separately or simply available somewhere nearby. In Palma and smaller villages, those answers can produce very different arrival experiences. Get the route to the parking area as well as the hotel entrance.

Do not leave luggage visible during sightseeing stops. If changing bases, consider checking in before a long visit rather than carrying everything around the island. Our Mallorca base comparison helps match the room to your driving plans.

Allow for mountain roads and controlled access

Winding roads require more attention than the map distance suggests. Use designated stopping places, give cyclists space and avoid routing through a demanding scenic section when everyone is already tired.

Some areas, including Formentor, can have seasonal access controls. Check current local arrangements before setting out and use permitted alternatives where required. A rental booking does not override road restrictions.

For an efficient week, explore Palma without the car, then collect it for the days when you move beyond the city. Our seven-day road trip provides a framework; adapt it to your confidence, passenger comfort and the parking you have actually arranged.

If your accommodation is in Palma for the first part of the trip, compare collecting the vehicle from a city office with returning to the airport. The cheaper daily rate may not offset another transfer and an inconvenient collection window.
