Getting from Athens Airport to the Centre

SUBURBAN TRAIN ON ATHENS AIRPORT

Athens Airport connects to the centre by metro, express bus and taxi. The best choice depends on your arrival time and the last part of the journey: reaching Syntagma or Monastiraki is not the same as reaching a room up a stepped lane in Plaka.

Metro line 3: useful for central connections

Airport metro services run on line 3, linking the airport with central stations including Syntagma and Monastiraki. Follow terminal signs to the railway station and check that you are boarding the metro service you intend to use, rather than a suburban train with a different route.

Buy the appropriate airport fare product. An ordinary urban ticket does not automatically cover the airport section. Inspect the conditions of passes carefully, including any airport journey allowance and onward validity.

Check departures for your actual day through the airport’s public transport page. Airport services do not necessarily run as frequently as trains within the city, and the airport section should not be assumed to operate through the night.

For the return, confirm that the train is specifically going to the airport. Other services on the same line may terminate earlier.

X95 express bus: practical for Syntagma

The X95 connects the airport with Syntagma, making it useful for centrally located accommodation and arrivals outside metro operating hours. Airport express buses operate around the clock, but journey duration depends on road traffic.

Use OASA’s airport express information for current departures, ticketing and payment methods. These services use airport-specific ticket conditions; do not assume an ordinary bus ticket or every city pass includes the journey.

From Syntagma, plan the last leg before setting off. A short walk may be comfortable with light luggage, while an onward taxi can be more sensible after a late flight or for accommodation with an awkward approach.

Taxis: compare the complete fare

A taxi provides a direct journey and can be practical for groups or travellers with heavy luggage. Use the official rank or a confirmed reputable booking, and verify the applicable fare arrangements for your address and time of travel. Night rates, the defined central zone and any extras should be clear before departure.

For prearranged transfers, confirm the meeting point, waiting allowance and procedure if the flight is delayed. Request child seats, accessible vehicles or extra luggage capacity explicitly rather than expecting a standard car to provide them.

Check your destination carefully

If going directly to a ferry, choose the port route rather than travelling into the historic centre by habit. Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio are different ports with different connections. Even after reaching the correct port, you may still need time to reach the departure gate.

Suburban rail can suit particular destinations, but it is a different service from the metro. Match the route to the station you need instead of buying a ticket simply because a train is leaving sooner.

Allow for the final walk

Save the address in a form you can show to a driver and keep the property’s telephone number available offline. Similar street names and unfamiliar transliterations are easier to resolve before leaving the terminal than after arriving at the wrong entrance.

Check your hotel’s entrance, reception arrangements and the best drop-off point. Historic streets can involve steps or pedestrian access, while a neighbourhood label may cover a large area.

For an early return flight, check the first usable public transport service and keep a backup. Choosing accommodation with a practical transfer can help; compare Athens’ main visitor areas alongside the rest of your itinerary.
