Five days is enough for a selective Algarve road trip, not an exhaustive circuit of every beach. This route progresses from the western coast towards Tavira, combining town time with a few coastal outings and using two bases rather than a new room every night.
It assumes five usable days and a car suited to the group. Adjust the start and finish around your actual airport or onward journey, keeping departure day less ambitious than an ordinary sightseeing day.
Day 1: Lagos and a local beach
Settle into Lagos, store luggage and take a short walk through the centre. Choose a beach according to access and conditions rather than setting off immediately for the most photographed cove.
If arrival consumes much of the day, keep the outing to the town and a meal. There is no advantage in driving towards a cliff route while tired simply to justify collecting the car early.
Use the evening to confirm tomorrow’s weather and any activity booking. Keep the vehicle in arranged parking and enjoy dinner without another logistical move.
Day 2: western scenery and time to stop
Choose a limited western outing, perhaps towards Sagres and the surrounding coastal landscape, with a clear lunch stop and return route. Do not assume the whole coast has the same swimming conditions as the beach near your room.
Wind and exposure can change the appeal of a viewpoint day. If conditions are uncomfortable, keep the trip town-focused or return earlier rather than continuing from a sense that every planned stop must be completed.
Leave time back in Lagos. A second night in the same place lets you enjoy the town rather than treating it only as yesterday’s arrival point.
Day 3: central coast and the accommodation change
Move towards the central Algarve, choosing one main beach or town stop rather than hopping continuously between coves. Check the approach and parking before committing to a location that may have limited space.
If you book a boat activity, give it a distinct block and verify current operating conditions and rules. A familiar cave name in a tour title does not establish that landing, swimming or every advertised perspective is possible on the day.
Continue to your eastern base with enough time for check-in. Keep luggage secure during stops and avoid leaving cases visible in the car while spending hours away.
Day 4: Tavira and an eastern beach outing
Spend the morning in Tavira’s streets and river setting. Stop for coffee or a cultural visit if it interests you, rather than treating the town only as somewhere to wait for the beach connection.
Choose the coastal outing according to current access and conditions, including the return where a boat or other transfer is involved. Carry what you need without assuming every beach provides the same facilities.
A longer lunch and shorter beach visit can be a satisfying version of the day. Let the weather and your group’s energy decide the balance rather than insisting on several hours on the sand.
Day 5: a smaller local outing and onward travel
If you have most of the day, choose another eastern town or a modest coastal walk that fits the departure route. Keep it close enough that fuel, packing and vehicle return remain straightforward.
Do not use the final morning to recover every missed western stop. Crossing the region again before a fixed connection can remove the buffer that makes departure comfortable.
Allow separately for the rental return, any shuttle and airline procedures. A final meal near the route is often more enjoyable than one more distant beach visited while watching the clock.
Make two bases work for you
Lagos plus Tavira is one useful pattern, but a central-coast base can replace either according to your priorities. Our Algarve accommodation comparison explains the different daily routines.
If you prefer not to move, reduce the geographic scope and spend the five days in one area with selected excursions. The point of a road trip is the flexibility to stop, not an obligation to keep driving until every town appears in the photographs.
Practical adjustments
For families, prioritise beaches with the approach and facilities you need; our easy-access beach guide helps make that choice. Keen walkers can replace a beach afternoon with a signed route appropriate to the conditions.
Read rental and parking terms before booking, and compare whether the car is useful from arrival or only after an initial town stay. Our car decision guide explains the alternatives. Keep one flexible interval for weather, because moving a coastal activity is easier when it does not displace three other fixed reservations.
If travelling with a mixed group, agree which day is primarily for the beach and which is for town or landscape interests. That makes the road trip easier to adapt than expecting every stop to satisfy every person equally. A slower morning can be a deliberate choice rather than lost time.
